Surviving the Holiday Season Without Overindulging (Or at Least Trying!)

Ah, the holiday season. Twinkling lights, festive music, and way too many plates of cookies, bowls of punch, and tiny appetizers that somehow keep finding their way to your plate. You know, the ones that make you wonder if your New Year’s resolutions are already doomed!! But don’t worry—I’ve got some fun and realistic tips to help you enjoy the holiday party scene without overindulging (too much, anyway)! Below are 6 easy strategies you can implement to ensure healthy holiday habits.

1. The Pre-Party Snack: AKA “Armor Up!”

Arriving hungry to a party is like showing up at a cookie factory with an empty shopping cart. Not a good idea. Before heading out, grab a small snack with protein and fibre—like a handful of nuts, a hard-boiled egg, or a Shaklee protein shake- that'll give you 20g of protein & 24 essential vitamins and minerals before you head out! This mini “pre-game” snack helps take the edge off your hunger so you can enjoy treats without devouring every plate in sight.

2. Hydration… a.k.a. Water is Your Holiday Wingman

For every festive drink you have, follow it up with a glass of water. Not only does this keep you hydrated (hello, glowing skin!), but it also helps you pace yourself. Plus, when you’re holding a glass of water, your aunt won’t keep asking why you don’t have “just one more” eggnog.

3. Scope Out the Buffet Like a Pro

If you're like me.. you want to see what's to eat before filing up your plate. Before you go wild and start, take a moment to check out all your options. Scan the table for some healthier picks, like veggies, fruit platters, or lean proteins. And yes, make room for a couple of your favourite indulgences too. Balance is key—and having a plan means less chance of getting carried away by the endless cheese balls.

4. Find a Fun (and Food-Free) Activity

Is there a holiday game, dancing, or a karaoke machine? Dive in! Distracting yourself with non-food activities lets you socialize without mindlessly snacking. I have a problem with making conversation directly beside the snack table.. it never ends well!

5. Mini Dessert Strategy: Treat Yourself (in Mini!)

Holiday treats are meant to be enjoyed! Try the mini-dessert approach: take small portions of a few favourites so you can sample everything without the post-party sugar crash. Focus on savouring every bite. And if you’re looking to sneak in some extra nutrition, add Lifeshake Protein to some holiday recipes, like energy bites or healthier cookies—just don’t tell anyone you made them healthy! 6. Enlist a Holiday Buddy

Having someone to help you stay on track can make all the difference. Choose a friend or family member who’s also trying to keep it balanced, and hold each other accountable (but in a fun way). They can give you a little nudge when you’re eyeing that third brownie, and you can remind them why a second round of eggnog might not be the best idea.

Remember, It’s a Season – Not a Sprint - Stick with those Healthy Holiday Habits

It’s easy to get caught up in “All the Food, All the Time” mode, but remember: the holiday season lasts a while, so no need to cram in all the treats at every party.

Pace yourself, enjoy your favourite foods in moderation, and remember it’s just as much about celebrating good times with people you care about.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself! The holidays are a time for joy and celebration, not guilt.
